The Mechanical Engineering Department, as old as the institution established in 1961, is one of the best in the state and among the few pioneering engineering institutes across India. Renowned for its academic excellence, cutting-edge facilities, and highly qualified faculty, the department has upheld a legacy of producing world-class mechanical engineers who have made significant contributions globally.

The department offers a comprehensive range of programs in Mechanical Engineering, catering to a wide spectrum of academic and research aspirations. These include:  

  • Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) in Mechanical Engineering  
  • Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Thermal Power Engineering  
  • Ph.D. Program  

The B. Tech program, accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), is a 4-year undergraduate program that provides students with a strong foundation in design, thermodynamics, manufacturing processes, robotics, and industrial engineering. As an autonomous department, it has the flexibility to design a curriculum tailored to industry demands. This includes integrating core mechanical engineering courses with emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, electric vehicle technology, data science, 3D printing, and computational techniques. The program strikes a balance between theoretical knowledge and practical training, ensuring students are well-equipped to address real-world challenges and contribute effectively to diverse industries. 

The M. Tech program, a 2-year postgraduate program, focuses on advanced areas such as heat transfer, energy systems, and computational techniques. It is designed for students aiming to explore research, development, and cutting-edge technologies of thermal systems in greater depth.  

The Ph.D. program offers a wide range of research opportunities in mechanical engineering and related interdisciplinary fields, supported by state-of-the-art lab facilities. This research-intensive program enables students to contribute to innovative research and technological advancements.  

With the advent of transformative technologies like electric vehicles, robotics, sustainable energy systems, and artificial intelligence these programs have evolved to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of engineering. This adaptability, combined with the increasing demand for skilled mechanical engineers, makes these programs not only highly relevant but also a future-proof and employable choice for students.

The department’s highly qualified faculty, most of whom hold Ph.D. degrees and are graduates of premier institutions such as IITs and NITs, bring extensive expertise and global exposure to the classroom. Students have been placed in top-tier companies such as Indian Oil, L&T, MRF, Apollo Tyres, and Martin Engineering, in addition to IT giants like TCS, Infosys, and CTS, and banking institutions such as Federal Bank and South Indian Bank. Many students are also inspired to pursue higher education at premier institutions like IIMs and IITs, thanks to the right guidance and support provided by the department.  

The presence of student clubs like SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) and ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) fosters a culture of innovation and excellence. Students actively participate in competitions, bringing laurels to the institution not only at the national level but also on international platforms. The 24-hour fabrication studio has witnessed the development of student-built automotive vehicles, which have created sparks in national-level competitions, showcasing the creativity and technical prowess of our students.

Salient Features

The primary focus of our curriculum is to impart technical know-how to students, promote their problem-solving skills, and guide and motivate them to come up with innovations in the latest technological domains. The department offers a large number of elective courses to provide a broad spectrum of knowledge to the students, which will help them pursue their own areas of interest. The course contents are periodically updated to incorporate the latest scientific and technological advances. The department gives great importance to developing a research culture among students; undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake various innovative research projects to help them imbibe the research culture. The syllabus emphasizes core mechanical domains like Production, Design, and Thermal Engineering. The various labs and workshops encompass the vital aspects of Mechanical Engineering, viz, Hydraulics, Machine Tools, Heat Engines, etc. Industrial visits and Educational tours are integral to the curriculum to familiarize the students with the industrial environments, working conditions, and significant industrial developments. In order to indulge deeply in their particular field of interest, the pre-final and final-year students electively specialize in relevant areas like Aerodynamics, Finite Element Analysis, Welding Technology, Cryogenics, Machine Tools, and Project Management. A full-fledged mechanical measurements laboratory, equipped with high-end equipment like Metallurgical Optical Microscope, Rockwell Hardness Testing Machine, Form Measurement Machine, etc., is also made available to help familiarize the students with precision measurement and testing. The CNC machining centre, 3D printing facilities, and the recently introduced Idea Lab enhance student competency by providing hands-on experience in advanced manufacturing and rapid prototyping, fostering innovation, and bridging the gap between theoretical learning and real-world industrial applications.
