HYDRAULICS LABORATORY

The Hydraulics Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides hands-on experience in fluid mechanics and hydraulic machinery through experiments on flow measurement, turbines, and pumps. This is one of the best Hydraulics lab facilities in the state of Kerala with a Floor area of 680 sq m. The lab consists of two sections namely Fluid Mechanics section and Hydraulic Machines section.

  • Fluid Mechanics Section:   Experiments like calibration of various flow measuring devices, measurement of flow characteristics through pipes, orifices, and various notches, Reynolds experiment, Chezys experiment, Plug Sluice, etc., are conducted in this section.
  • Hydraulic Machines Section:   Students are exposed to technical aspects of Hydraulic turbines such as Kaplan turbine, Francis turbine, and Pelton Wheel, and Pumps such as Centrifugal pump, Self-priming pump, Reciprocating pump, Gear pump, Hydraulic ram, etc. besides doing experiments to analyse the performance characteristics of these machines.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING WORKSHOPS

The Mechanical Engineering Workshops – Fitting, Carpentry, Foundry, and Smithy, introduce first-year B.Tech students to basic manufacturing techniques and hands-on skills in material shaping, joining, and manufacturing processes.

  • Fitting and Carpentry (Floor area – 300 sq m): In the fitting section, students practice making metallic joints and shapes by filing and cutting metal specimens. In the carpentry section, students undergo training in making wooden joints and shapes. Fitting shops include instruments like Bench Grinding machines, Bench Drill, Chop Saw, etc. Carpentry shops include instruments like Circular Saw, Universal Wood-Working Lathe, Wood-Working Lathes, etc.
  • Foundry and Smithy (Floor area – 420 sq m): In the foundry section, students practice making sand moulds which enable the casting of metal. A welding section is also here where students practice welding. MIG welding apparatus is provided here. In the smithy section, students are trained to make different metal shapes like bolt head, nut, etc., by heating the specimen in the furnace and forging it on the anvil.

MACHINE SHOP - I

In Machine Shop-I, students develop their working skills and study metal cutting principles in machine tools like Lathe, Drilling machines, etc. Students are also acquainted with various measurement devices and study standards of measurements in metrology.

MACHINE SHOP II

 In Machine shop-II students develop their skills in making working models through operations like milling, slotting, shaping, grinding, and planning. This lab comprises several machine tools like Milling machines (Universal and Vertical), Slotting machines, Shaping machines, grinding machines (Surface grinding machine, Universal Cylindrical Grinding Machine, and Universal Tool and Cutter Grinder), and Planning machines.

CNC LABORATORY

The CNC Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department provides hands-on experience in computer-aided manufacturing using advanced CNC turning and milling machines. Students gain hands-on experience in programming, simulation, and precision machining operations. The lab bridges the gap between theoretical learning and industrial applications in automated manufacturing. 

It is designed according to the state-of-the-art technology and offers training on the CNC Trainer lathe, CNC Turning Machine and 3 axis Milling Machine.

MECHANICAL MEASUREMENTS LABORATORY

The Mechanical Measurements Laboratory provides students with practical knowledge of precision instruments and techniques for measuring pressure, temperature, speed, and other mechanical parameters.

This lab comprises equipment like Toolmakers microscope, Autocollimator, Pneumatic Comparator, Stroboscope, Deadweight pressure gauge tester, Planimeter, LVDT Apparatus, Vernier Height Gauge, Metallurgical Optical Microscope, Surface Plate, Profile Projector, etc. Sophisticated precision measuring instruments like Rockwell Hardness Testing Machine and Form Measurement Machine are also included.

HEAT ENGINES LABORATORY

THERMAL ENGINEERING LAB I

The Thermal Engineering Lab I enables students to study the performance and operation of internal combustion engines and related thermal systems through practical experiments. This lab comprises heat engines like Fiat Petrol Engine, Kirloskar Diesel Engine, Ruston Diesel Engine, Textool 4 Stroke Diesel Engine, Textool 2 Stroke Diesel Engine, etc. Latest machines like VCR-CRDI Engine Test Rig, VCR-Multi Fuel Test Rig, and LPG/CNG Gas Kit Test Rig are also included.

 

THERMAL ENGINEERING LAB II

The Thermal Engineering Lab II offers practical training in conduction, convection, and radiation through experiments on heat exchangers, insulating materials, and thermal systems. In this lab, students can do experiments on apparatuses like Natural Convection, Forced Convection, Emissivity, Stefan Boltzman, Composite Walls, Critical Heat Flux Apparatus, etc. It is also equipped with facilities for performance analysis of machines such as Air Compressors, Blowers, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning plants.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY

The Mechanical Engineering Laboratory provides hands-on experience in analyzing the dynamics and kinematics of machines. Students can conduct experiments on Vibration Lab, Whirling of Shafts, Motorized Gyroscope, Universal Governor Apparatus. PLC, Pneumatic Trainer Kit, Hydraulic Trainer Kit, Non-Destructive Testing, 3D Printing.

COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN & ANALYSIS LABORATORY

The Computer Aided Design & Analysis Laboratory equips students with skills in 2D drafting, 3D modelling, simulation, and engineering analysis using tools like AutoCAD, Fusion 360, Creo, ANSYS etc. It enables students to create 2D drawings, 3D models, and assemblies essential for product design and development. Students also learn to perform structural and dynamic analysis for evaluating design performance under real-world conditions. The lab enhances design visualization skills and prepares students for modern engineering design practices.

CFD LABORATORY

The Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Laboratory provides students with exposure to simulation-based analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer using advanced software tools. It enables visualization and numerical modeling of complex fluid dynamics problems in engineering applications. Students gain skills in using software like ANSYS Fluent for solving real-world thermal and fluid flow challenges.

METALLURGICAL LABORATORY

The Metallurgical Laboratory offers practical training in the study of metals and their properties through microstructural analysis and material testing. It is equipped with optical microscopes, polishing machines, and heat treatment furnaces for specimen preparation and examination. Students learn to identify material structures, grain patterns, and phase transformations essential for engineering applications.

IDEA LABORATORY

The IDEA Laboratory is the latest addition to the Mechanical Engineering Department, fostering innovation and creativity among students. It provides facilities for prototyping, product development, and interdisciplinary projects with tools like 3D printers, Arduino kits, Tinkercad and fabrication equipment. The lab promotes hands-on learning, entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and collaborative innovation in engineering design.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT LIBRARY

The Mechanical Engineering Department Library serves as a dedicated resource center with a rich collection of 5,195 textbooks, reference materials, project reports, and technical journals. It supports the academic and research needs of students and faculty in various domains of mechanical engineering. The library offers a quiet study environment with access to digital resources and previous university question papers. It plays a vital role in fostering self-learning, research, and academic excellence within the department.
